Manaus Airport announces new phase of runway construction

• The new phase of interventions takes place over a larger stretch of the runway, from September 4 to January 8 
•  The aim of the works is to ensure the safety and efficiency of airport operations, as well as to enhance passenger travel experience, promote local tourism, and boost the region's economic growth 
•  The works are part of the Concession Contract signed with the National Civil Aviation Agency – ANAC.

August 2023 -  The CEO of the Amazon Airports Concessionaire, Karen Strougo, announced this Wednesday (16), during a press conference, a new phase of infrastructure works on the airport terminal's runway. The works are outlined in the Concession Contract signed with the National Civil Aviation Agency – ANAC.

The new phase of interventions takes place over a larger stretch of the runway, requiring closure from September 4 to January 8, 2024, only from 4 a.m. to 12 p.m. During other hours, the airport will operate normally.   

Karen Strougo explained that the aim of the works is to ensure the safety and efficiency of airport operations, as well as to enhance passenger travel experience, promote local tourism, and boost the region's economic growth.

The CEO emphasized that all planning for the works was accompanied by the airport community and, in particular, the airlines, which are no longer selling tickets for the impacted time and are rescheduling flights for the afternoon and evening hours without cancellations or loss of flight numbers during the period. 

“Regarding the runway, in March of this year we had an unscheduled maintenance event requiring intervention on the asphalt, impacting operations. This is what we need to avoid. These works, therefore, are necessary to ensure operational continuity and the safety of landings and takeoffs,” highlighted Karen Strougo.

Among the planned interventions on the runway are asphalt resurfacing throughout the taxiway system (where aircraft land and take off), as well as drainage systems and horizontal and vertical signage, among others.

The Amazon Airports Concessionaire, a member of the VINCI Airports network, has been managing the airport for over a year. As soon as it began operations, it implemented an emergency plan with improvements in restrooms, air conditioning, and installation of free high-speed Wi-Fi, among others. In May 2023, it inaugurated the first work outlined in the Concession Contract: the new passenger access channel for international and domestic flights, which now features a new automated boarding pass authentication system. In June, it began the first phase of works on a part of the runway, without impacting operations.
